Single leg scratch bars offer more flexibility so that the bike is less disturbed by surface roughness such as corner markers, and also by their nature are mounted further back on the bike than the loop type and tend to give more steering to the bike. Two types were evident at the World Championships, one with mini wheels, and one with a plastic ball on the end of the rod to take the extra wear. The rules state that if mini wheels are used they must not offer any grip to improve cornering, so it is common to use a ball race as the wheel. We have developed two types of scratch bar, see below:
